Surfer Rosa – Pixies
Surfer Rosa is, arguably, the Pixies’ best album. While their next record Doolittle is most often hailed as their magnum opus, I personally found Surfer Rosa to be just as fun and catchy, yet more cohesive from start to finish.
Surfer Rosa is a rollercoaster of infectious melodies that are impossible to resist. Each track is not only a pleasure to listen to but also incredibly fun to sing along to. The lyrics are instantly memorable and decidedly intricate. This leaves the listener with an earworm that raises questions and a compulsion to find answers to them as the refrains repeat over and over again in their mind.
One of the standout aspects of Surfer Rosa is the exceptional production by Steve Albini. His signature drum sound is integral to this record, adding a heaviness and intensity that elevates the entire LP.
While every song on Surfer Rosa has its merits, a personal favourite is the iconic Where Is My Mind?, with its dreamlike quality and thought-provoking lyrics. River Euphrates, Break My Body and Gigantic also showcase the band’s raw energy and the beautiful harmonies between Kim Deal and Frank Black.
Surfer Rosa’s display of the Pixies’ unmatched songwriting make it a must-listen for any punk rocker.
